THE MOTHER of a boy who fell from a four-storey building in Cwmbran has praised passers-by who came to his rescue, as she prepares to stay with her son for months of treatment in hospital.

Callum Crowley, aged 12, is in hospital with what have been described as “life-changing” injuries after he fell from the top of a building of flats in Llewellyn Road in Southville, Cwmbran, on Saturday evening.

The pupil of Talocher School, in Monmouth, was out with a friend when he is said to have climbed a ladder to the top of the building.

His mum, Kate Sherwin, said a woman who saw him fall ran to his aid before paramedics arrived.

She added: “A carer who saw him fall ran over to him and stayed with him to keep him calm. She was amazing.

“She put a coat over him and tried to keep him calm.

“Another man who was walking by also helped. I can’t thank them enough.”

Ms Sherwin, of Clos Cae Nant, Southville, said she had made contact with the carer to thank her for her help and is hoping to thank her in person.

Callum’s friend went to alert Ms Sherwin who was at the scene within ten minutes of the fall.

Paramedics arrived but Ms Sherwin said Callum could not be moved due to the seriousness of his condition. He was later taken to hospital by ambulance.

He has since come out of intensive care and is recovering, but doctors have said he is facing a lengthy stay in hospital and his injuries remain serious.

“I don’t know why he went up the ladder, but he is just a boy,” said Ms Sherwin.

“The ladder was just left there.

“The incident is being investigated and it is being taken seriously.”

Callum is currently in the high dependency unit at Bristol Children’s Hospital, where he has been treated for injuries to his back and six other serious injuries.

Ms Sherwin said he is facing the prospect of around five months in hospital, with a transfer to a hospital in Cardiff or London for specialist treatment required.

She has vowed to stay with him during his treatment.

As the Argus reported earlier this week on the incident, The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has confirmed that the circumstances of the incident are being investigated and that the site has been visited.

A Gwent Police spokeswoman said at the time: “We received a call at 8.49pm on Saturday, May 6, regarding an incident on Llewellyn Road in Cwmbran, where it was reported that a 12 year old boy had fallen off scaffolding,” she said.

“The boy is currently in Bristol Children’s Hospital, where his condition is described as life changing but stable.”

A spokesman from the Wales Ambulance Service said paramedics in rapid response vehicles and an ambulance were sent to the scene at around 8.55pm.
