PUPILS from across Torfaen flocked to a Cwmbran heritage venue last month to take part in a creative gardening competition.
Llanyrafon Manor held a wheelbarrow competition called Barrowfull of Schools which tasked nursery and primary schools to spruce up their wheelbarrows.
The objective was to design, plan and plant a wheelbarrow that matched the theme Grow to Feed, which could apply to nature, wildlife or people.
Five schools took part and worked for two months on their barrows before delivering them to Llanyrafon Manor to be judged.
First prize went to Blenheim Road Primary School in Torfaen followed by Clytha Nursery and Gaer Primary School in Newport.
The McCann & Partners Award for Additional Merit went to Garnteg Primary School in Torfaen and a Special Commendation was awarded to Fairoak Nursery in Newport in conjunction with Woodland Park Community Group
The event attracted hundreds of people and votes and coincided with the Cwmbran venue’s Rural Food and Craft Market held on the last Sunday of each month.
Event organiser, Collette Crewe, said: “We would like to extend a huge thank you and congratulations to all the schools that took part in our Barrowfull of Schools Wheelbarrow competition. It is always nerve racking launching a new event but we are committed to supporting local schools and wanted to show families this beautiful free, family friendly venue that is on their doorstep.”
