VANDALS have targeted Pontnewydd Primary School causing damage to play areas and the school garden during the summer holidays.

As well as the discovery of broken play equipment, officers from Torfaen council found overturned picnic benches were overturned, pulled down fencing and the school’s greenhouse, which was made from recycled plastic bottles, destroyed.

Cllr David Yeowell, Torfaen council’s executive member for education, said: “This was a totally pointless act of vandalism and a complete waste of time and resources that could have been much better spent elsewhere.

“While the damage done does not have a huge financial cost, the real victims here are the children of Pontnewydd Primary School who have had their play areas damaged, and projects they have spent many hours working on destroyed.”

A spokeswoman from Gwent Police said: “On August 6, 2017 at approximately 6pm a nursery play area was damaged at Pontnewydd Primary School in Cwmbran.

“Damage was caused to an outdoor playhouse, fencing and a drain.”
