PROPOSALS to transform areas of Cwmbran's shopping hub, Cwmbran Centre, were revealed to the public this week in a two-day exhibition.

Shoppers were invited to view artist impressions for the future of the centre, which aims to provide a facelift to the Gwent Square and Monmouth Square areas.

The proposals by the shopping centre owners, M&G Real Estate, will see external cladding put on Monmouth House and the House of Fraser, new signage on the Congress Theatre and the installation of new paving, deckers and planters.

Other aspects of the proposals include improvements to drainage and the removal of the old bandstand with an aim of opening up the spaces to help host community events.

Literature displayed at the public consultation said improvements in Monmouth Square aim to "introduce colour into what is a lacklustre space".

It added the proposals were motivated by a "greater need for community and activity space" to hold seasonal events.

Investment manager at M&G Real Estate, Anthony Ross, said: "“M&G Real Estate is proud to be the long-term owner of Cwmbran Centre and we understand its importance as the heart of the local community.

"The major modernisation and improvements proposed for Monmouth Square and Gwent Square will help transform the experience of shoppers of all ages, while preserving the friendly, welcoming atmosphere at one of the largest and most successful shopping destinations in Wales."

At the public consultation, artist impressions lined the walls showing envisioning the future spaces and how they would be used by the public.

In Monmouth square particularly, the developers hope to use it as a place to hold market events.

Costings for the project have not been released and the works are designed by Beyond - a company who help design and brand shopping centres across Europe.

Mr Ross added: “We are delighted to have welcomed so many visitors to the public exhibition over the past couple of days and the proposals have been well received.

"We have had a number of useful comments on the scheme, which will form part of our internal discussions prior to application.

"We look forward to submitting a planning application in the coming weeks and we will keep the local community informed moving forwards.”

Chairman of Cwmbran Community Council, Bob Jones, welcomed the plans.

“I’m very pleased that the town centre is to receive a makeover," he said.

"This will make Cwmbran an even better place to live, work and play.”

Planning applications for Gwent Square and Monmouth Square will be submitted with a estimated start date of Summer 2018, subject to planning approval.
