A NEW memorial has been unveiled in Blaenavon ahead of next year’s centenary marking the end of the First World War.

The 'Blaenavon Royal British Legion 1914/18 WW Centenary Memorial' was declared open on Friday, December 1 and a short ceremony was held in Blaenavon.

The unveiling involved Cllr Anthony Hunt, the leader of Torfaen council, Cllr Alan Jones, a Blaenavon ward member and the council's armed forces champion, and members of the Blaenavon Royal British Legion.

Cllr Jones said: " My thanks go to Torfaen County Borough Council leader Anthony Hunt for attending and also a very special thank you to Illtyd & Richard Caddick from I.J Caddick & Son for providing this memorial free of charge for the British Legion."

The new memorial is located close to the war memorial and clock on Church Road.

Emblazoned with the words "We will remember them" the memorial will serve as a dedication to the servicemen who lost their lives in the First World War, which ended on November 11, 1918.

One-hundred-and-sixty soldiers from Blaenavon died in the First World War and 63 serviceman did not return from the conflict in the Second World War.

The older memorial is also dedicated to soldiers from the conflicts away from the World Wars.
