FROM Pontypool Museum’s digital archives are two images which take a look back at the heavy industries of the area.

Across Torfaen, the remnants of industry can be seen from former chimney stacks to preserved monuments such as Big Pit or the Blaenavon Ironworks.

One of the images shows the Avondale tinplate works, which were based in Pontnewydd.

The other image is of the Jack Pit in Cwmffrwdoer, near Pontypool.

As known as the Gwenallt colliery, the pit was closed in 1929.

These images were donated by the Pontypool Museum as part of its digital archive, which aims to preserve historic documents, images and records from the area.

To find out more about the digital archive, contact the museum at pontypoolmuseum@hotmail.co.uk or call 01495 752036.

The Free Press thanks Pontypool Museum for allowing the paper to use these images.
