THE landlady of The Scrum Half pub in Pontypool has died after five years of running the premises.
Gwenda Lowe, 57, who was from Pontypool, took over the pub in July 2008, with her husband Michael, 59.
Previously she enjoyed a 25-year career as a catering college lecturer in Oldham.
Mr Lowe, who was a driving instructor, said that they met in 1988 when she became his pupil.
He said: “I knew I was going to marry her the moment I saw her. I offered her free driving lessons and it seemed to have worked.”
The couple lived in Manchester for about 20 years before they moved to Wales to take over the running of the pub.
He said: “She took over the steering wheel of the pub, running karaoke and serving behind the bar. She was feisty and a huge supporter of pub watch but everybody loved her.”
Following her tragic and sudden death on September 22 at the premises, Mr Lowe has chosen to give up the running of the pub.
The new licensees will be Hayley Bright, who has worked as a bar lady there since March, and DJ Mike Cullen.
Miss Bright said: “Gwenda was fantastic. She will be sadly missed. She was bubbly, friendly and was always there for you to talk to her.”
Mr Lowe explained that the couple have no children but have kept pet rotweilers since 1991.
He said: “She is much loved not only just by me but the whole community. So many people didn’t get to say goodbye so we will be raising a glass to her to celebrate her life.”
The funeral will take place on October 10 at Gwent Crematorium at 2pm, before the wake at The Scrum Half at 2.45pm.
