TWO Pontypool school pupils are leading the way in their chosen sports.

Ysgol Gyfun Gwynllyw pupil, Lowri Hodder, 14, competed in the Welsh Alpine Championships 2014 in Champery, Switzerland earlier this month.

She raced for the Dragons in the Slalom and Giant Slalom race.

The year nine pupil explained: “We had five days of intense training before the race and on the day we had to complete the course on two separate runs.

“There were teams from all over Europe and there was one team from Australia.”

Lowri came seventh in the Giant Slalom race but unfortunately was disqualified in the slalom as she missed one gate.

She said: “The experience was amazing and one I will remember for a long time.”

She first tried her hand at skiing on holiday at the age of nine, and then went to Pontypool Ski Centre for lessons..

She now trains three times a week and competes on dry slopes.

The competition in Switzerland was her first competition on snow after she trained with Snowsport Wales.

She said: “Skiing on snow is different but I really enjoyed it.”

In March she will take part in the British Alpine seeding event at Pontypool Ski Centre.

In the next two years, she hopes to make it into the Great Britain Squad.

While year seven’s Harri Lloyd-Evans was successful in the South Wales Tennis Championship over the Christmas holidays.

More than 100 players took part in 140 matches over four days at Cardiff Metropolitan University, but it was Harri that took the 12U title.

He is a member of Stow Park Tennis Club and trains three times a week.

Tennis has become a family affair, with his dad and both his sisters playing the sport.

Harri has got into the South Wales Tennis Squad and his target is to be one of the five who will be chosen out of that squad.
