PONTYPOOL artists have joined forces to help draw new members to Pontypool Museum.

The museum is currently trying to attract 1,000 new members to make up for a £19,000 cash shortfall in its budget after losing council funding.

After hearing the news, 23 members of Pontypool and District Art group decided to sign up as corporate members.

The treasurer of the art group, Roger Purbrick, explained that the group exhibit annually at the museum, and enter work to be displayed in the winter art exhibition.

But since the group joined as members they will also be exhibiting work in the museum’s cafe in January and February.

He said: “The museum also gives the art club members a great opportunity to have their work on display in a public place.

"It’s not just our members who exhibit there but a wide range of artists and our members enjoy visiting to gain inspiration for their own work."

The art club began life at Pontypool Museum five years ago, growing out of a water colour art course run by Torfaen Council.

Starting with 15 members, the art club grew and when it hit 20 people, it was decided to move the art club to Trosnant House, which could provide a bigger work space.

Two weeks ago the art club moved to Woodlands Field in Penygarn so that it itself can accept more members.

The group, who meet every Friday, specialise in water colour, acrylics, pastels and drawing.
