FOUR generations of a Pontypool family joined nearly 2,000 participants for a fundraising walk in memory of their dad and grandad, "a real character who was well-known in the community".

Jayne Lewis, 49, from Pontypool, joined her mother, daughter, son-in-law and four grandchildren for the Cardiff Memory Walk in aid of the Alzheimer's Society on Saturday.

Club manager and entrepreneur George Savva died from the disease in May and now his family want to help others living with the condition.

Ms Lewis said: “Dad was well-known in the community; he was a fantastic host and a real character and is greatly missed.

“It was a great day and has been lovely to see so many people of different ages come together with the common goal of fighting dementia.”

Ms Lewis walked with her 76-year-old mother Pam, daughter Khloe Waite, 29, son-in-law Nik Waite, 37, and their four children, Beau, Ralphie, Ronnie and Ryder.

The walk, in Bute Park in Cardiff, was one of a national series of walks organised by the Alzheimer’s Society to fight dementia.

Casualty actress Suzanne Packer, from Abergavenny, also joined the thousands of walkers for either the 2km or 10km walk.

Funds raised from Cardiff Memory Walk will be used to support people living with dementia and their carers and to fund research into finding a cure.
