A £20 million Torfaen school building project passed a new milestone yesterday as council chiefs agreed to appoint a contractor to build three primaries able to accommodate 1,000 pupils.

The scheme will see Ysgol Panteg, Blenheim Road and Llantarnam primary schools replaced by September 2016.

Yesterday, Torfaen cabinet agreed to appoint the unnamed builder to replace the three schools. The new Ysgol Panteg will be able to accommodate 420 schoolchildren, Llantarnam Community Primary 315 pupils and Blenheim Road an-other 315 children.

The three establishments will be built using a "standardised model school", which will help to make economies of scale. The development will also release sites for capital receipts, help to enhance the education of pupils and deliver community benefits for local people, according to the cabinet report on the project.

The report states: "The out-come of the tender evaluation gives assurance that the preferred main contractor is able to deliver the project in accordance with Torfaen's prerequisites to the advantage of the pupils of the schools."
