The headteacher of Crownbridge School, Lesley Bush, confirmed that the school has not been evacuated and as it is an inset day there are no pupils in the school.

A mother of a pupil Ann Bottomley, said that the first she heard about the incident was when her 16 year old daughter text her to say that they had been evacuated for over an hour while a bomb squad were called after a pupil brought a grenade to school.

She said: “After receiving the message I went online to find out more as I couldn’t believe that the school or the council had not contacted parents to keep everyone informed and reading online there are lots of worried parents.

“I do not want my daughter to be in the yard and I think that parents should have been informed to go and pick their child up.”

We have had reports that Crownbridge Special School has also been evacuated.

A spokeswoman for Gwent Police said they received a report at 10.15am that a pupil what was described as "a hand grenade" in his bag and the school had been evacuated as a precautionary measure.

Police attended and it was established that it was a piece of war memorabilia and was hollow.

The spokeswoman said that "school has resumed, no danger posed, and no harm caused to anyone."

However, reports we are getting that hundreds of pupils are still outside the school and other pupils are confined to their classrooms.

Despite a comment from Torfaen council, around 400 pupils are still outside the school.

A spokesman for Torfaen council said the incident was a "false alarm" and it led to the evacuation of "one building" and that all pupils are now back in school.

Reports say the evacuation is because a pupil brought a fake grenade into school.
