ABERSYCHAN residents took to the challenge of creating the best spooky carved pumpkin as part of a Hallowe'en competition.

Garndiffaith Millennium Hall committee organised the event by asking children from local schools and the local community to submit a carved pumpkin as part of a competition.

Organiser, Gwyneira Clark said that the response was better than she expected with young and old taking up the challenge.

Even residents at Ty Bryn care home joined in and a total of 25 entries were submitted for judging.

Ms Clark said: “The entries were tremendous and the skill used in some of the designs was very impressive, making the task for the judges very difficult.”

On Wednesday, the pumpkin competition was judged at the hall in Garndiffaith by Abersychan ward councillor’s Giles Davies and Wayne Tomlinson and local business owner, hairdresser Nicola Davies-House.

In the under five's category, the winning pumpkin was submitted by The Flying Start group.

In the first children’s category, the winner was Macie Davies with her pumpkin based on the Cookie Monster, and in the children’s second category, the winner was a pumpkin by Isabel Owen.

In the adult category the pumpkin based on a spider's web won first place and was submitted by Amy Harper.

Ms Clark added: “It has been a really good event and the community made a great effort to get involved.

“The event was the first for the hall and hopefully it will become an annual event and we will get even more entries next year.”

The pumpkins remain on display at the hall ready for the sold out family Hallowe'en event taking place tomorrow.
