THE family of a pensioner who died after being struck by his car near Cwmbran has been named.

The pedestrian has been named as 74 year old Reginald Gerald Harper, known as Gerry.

Gwent Police said that the incident happened on Ponthir Road, Llanfrechfa, at 2.24pm, when the car collided with Mr Harper.

He was treated for injuries at the scene and taken to the Royal Gwent Hospital, where he died later.

A statement release by his family said: "It is with great sadness that Gerry Harper passed away on Thursday after his parked vehicle unexpectedly rolled back, knocking him unconscious.

"Despite the sterling efforts of the emergency services, he did not recover."

The family are said to be "devastated by the sudden loss" but that they would like to offer their thoughts and prayers to all who knew Mr Harper, and their deepest thanks and praise to all who helped at the accident.

They added: “Gerry was a very popular character in the community and will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

“Funeral arrangements will be announced.”

South Wales Fire and Rescue Service from Cwmbran and New Inn also attended.
