CHILDREN and parents are celebrating after plans to re-open a park recreation ground that shut at least 10 years ago moved a step closer this month.

Youngsters used to play at the Cwmbran Park ground but the site has not had equipment for a decade or more, planning documents reveal.

On Tuesday, Torfaen planning committee gave proposals to put up a 27ft climbing net at the former play area the green light.

The pyramid climbing net will feature a steel pole and a three dimensional climbing net 49ft in diameter.

Other play equipment is set to be introduced at the former recreation ground off Bellevue Road with input from the Friends of Cwmbran Park, a planning report shows.

However, this equipment is smaller and therefore will not require planning permission from Torfaen council.

Meanwhile, councillors also approved proposals to install a new shelter at the Seren Fach Nursery in School Close, Ponthir.

The shelter is to be around 60ft by 17ft and up to 13ft in height.

A Torfaen council spokesman told the Argus that planning committee members had given both plans the go ahead at a meeting held on February 10.
