PUPILS sowed wild flowers, built bug hotels and planted fruit trees as part of a school project designed to boost biodiversity in Torfaen.

Ponthir Church School took part in a series of classroom activities this week in an initiative which comes under the Pollinators for Life project led by Torfaen council.

Similar projects will be held at every primary school across the borough in the coming months.

The education outreach team from Greenmeadow Community Farm ran classroom workshops and a quiz to help the children understand the relationship between flowers and pollinating insects.

They also learnt about importance of pollinators to the food chain and the environment, before going outside to turn their school playground into a pollinator friendly habitat.

Headteacher Ceris Spooner said: “This was a fantastic opportunity for the children and staff to be outside, planting trees and wildflowers and discussing the importance of pollinators with the team from Greenmeadow Farm.

“This hands on, outdoor learning experience meant that the children gained so much more than reading about it inside the classroom.”
