PUPILS in Pontypool released hundreds of pink balloons yesterday, in memory of their school teacher who died following a battle against cancer.

Padre Pio Primary School teacher Lisa Evans, age 35, died on April 8 from secondary breast cancer.

All 214 pupils at the school released pink balloons in her memory yesterday, before the school closed at 1pm as a mark of respect.

Following the balloon release, the children sang Sing it in the Valleys, Mrs Evans’ favourite song.

Her funeral also took place yesterday with a service held at St Paul's Church, Newbridge, at 1.45pm.

Deputy head teacher, Nicola McGinty, spoke during the service and described Mrs Evans as a “remarkably talented teacher".

Mrs Evans had been working with pupils at the school for the last 10 years, firstly as a supply teacher, and then she joined as a reception teacher in 2010.

She also loved teaching music and co-ordinated all musical events including Christmas concerts and Eisteddfods.

Mrs McGinty said: “Lisa’s determination was most prevalent and poignant during the last two years with her illness.

“Even when Lisa was first diagnosed you would never have guessed what she was facing. We admired her greatly and could not believe her strength and courage.”

A letter written by the pupils in a Year Five class, read: “Our learning with her was enjoyable as she was passionate about it.

“We miss Mrs Evans dearly and will remember her forever in our hearts.”

Mrs Evans, of Pontllanfraith, and formerly of Newbridge, leaves behind her husband Andrew and stepchildren Aimee and Kirsty.
