POULTRY farmers made an eggs-traordinary discovery when they laid eyes on a huge shell even bigger than duck eggs.

Nick and Sally King were stunned after finding the 106g chicken egg in the nest box at their holdings in Abersychan.

It is almost twice as big as a standard, free range egg and would probably be enough to prepare a full English breakfast.

In the US, a small egg weighs around 40g, a medium one 47g and a large one 54g.

“Extra-large” US eggs weigh 61g and the biggest ones, the “jumbo” eggs, weigh 68g while and in Europe the biggest size – “very large” – is for eggs 73g and over.

The couple said one of their hens had laid it.

They have never seen eggs of this size even at shows.

Nick, of The Firs, Waterworks Lane, said on Wednesday: “We keep and sell free range eggs laid at our home.

“On rare occasions we collect very large eggs from the nest box, but this morning one of our hens laid an egg, which weighs 106g.

“We have visited many shows but never seen anything of this size.

“It even outsizes duck eggs.

“Many people this morning have been amused by this egg.”

Although it is said you cannot make an omelette without breaking eggs, the Kings have yet to decide what to do with the huge shell. Egg-cellent stuff.
