UPDATE: 2.45pm

A HERO cyclist told how he helped to rescue a pensioner after he fell into a canal on his mobility scooter.

Mike White, 38, was cycling along the canal near the County Hospital in Griffithstown when he spotted the 65 year old on Saturday.

Two men had unsuccessfully tried to pluck him from the water so he and his pal Paul Sergeant jumped off their bikes and helped with the rescue.

Mr White, a team manager at a Lloyds Bank call centre in Newport, said: “Together the four of us got him out.

“None of us got into the water. We took him to a nearby wall and sat him down.

“He was waist to chest deep.”

The pensioner had bought the mobility scooter the previous day, Mr White said.

He was plucked from the canal near County Hospital, Coed-y-Gric Road, Griffithstown, at lunchtime.

Firefighters treated the man for hypothermia after he was rescued from the canal, South Wales Fire and Rescue Service said.

He was later taken to Royal Gwent Hospital in Newport.

The Welsh Ambulance Service said the man was "conscious and breathing" as he was taken to hospital at around 12.30pm.

Mr White understands that the pensioner was on his scooter on Coed-y-Gric Road, not on the canal path, when he lost control of it and fell into the canal.

Mr White, of Gaer, Newport, added: "He went straight into the water.

“He had bought the mobility scooter the previous day. It was a day old.

“There were two other gentlemen who were struggling to get him out.

“He was conscious but he couldn’t get out himself.

“He was cold and in shock.”
