GWENT towns and cities will light up with festive cheer in a series of Christmas light switch-ons.

Newport’s main event will take place on Thursday, November 19, from 4pm, with an evening of free fun and entertainment in the heart of the city centre.

Activities will take place along Commercial Street from 4pm including singing from Newport Rock Choir, performances from Gwent Music and a meet and greet from Capital FM’s street stars.

The mayor of Newport, councillor Herbie Thomas, will switch on the lights at 6pm at the junction between Charles Street and Commercial Street, accompanied by players from Newport Gwent Dragons.

Danter’s funfair will also open along the riverfront walk between The Riverfront Theatre and University of South Wales buildings.

X-factor winner, Sam Bailey, will turn on Cwmbran Shopping Centre Christmas lights on Wednesday, November 18 at 6pm followed by an exclusive concert by the singer.

Elsewhere in Torfaen, The Pontypool Christmas parade will sweep over town for its 25th year on Saturday November 28.

The event will hold a Santa’s grotto in Pontypool indoor market from midday, a cavalcade procession from 4.30pm and a carol service lead by the Salvation Army Band.

The Christmas lights will be switched on by Chairman of Pontypool Community Council, Cllr Bryn Parker.

On Monday, November 30, Blaenavon Town Council will hold the procession from Blaenavon Workmen’s Hall for a switch-on at 7pm.

The event will also host a blessing of the crib ceremony, carols, music, entertainment and a special visit from Father Christmas.

The Blackwood lights will be switched on by the town mayor in the town centre at 4.30pm with the help of the “carnival queen and members of her court” outside the Wilkinson’s store.

Father Christmas will also arrive on his sleigh, courtesy of Pontllanfraith Rotary Club.

Risca Town Council have requested lights to be erected Tuesday, December 1.

And, in Monmouthshire, the big switch on takes place at Abergavenny Market which will be transformed into a Christmas scene on Saturday, November 21.

The market is open from 9am to 5pm and the big Christmas light switch on is at 4.30pm.

There will also be a big Christmas light switch on at Caldicot Castle and Country Park on Friday, November 27.

Chepstow's lights will be turned on Saturday, November 28 at about 5.30pm after the arrival of Santa. 

A whole day's activities will take place in the town. A market will be held there between 10am to 3pm and entertainment by local groups will be held from 2pm.
