MEMBERS of a Torfaen-based Nepalese community group were recognised at a special reception at the Civic Centre in Pontypool for their fundraising work following the earthquakes last year.
Two tremors in April and May of 2015 ravaged the Himalayan nation, with estimations at over 9,000 deaths and nearly 25,000 injured in the quakes.
Members of the Wales Gurkha Community (WGC) from Cwmbran attended the event after the organisation held a number of fundraisers since the events.
Torfaen’s executive member for communities cllr David Daniels said: “The images from Nepal were profound and inspired people across the country to dig deep and raise funds for those affected.
“There was a notable contribution from Torfaen, with members of the Nepalese community leading the way.”
Members of Wales Gurkhas Community, including president Narendra Limbu, met with the High Sheriff of Gwent, Andrew Tuggey DL, cllr David Daniels, Mayoress of Torfaen Amanda Price, Torfaen chief executive Alison Ward and Mayor of Torfaen Giles Davies at the ceremony in their honour.
