FALKLANDS War veteran Simon Weston returned to Cwmbran to give an inspirational talk to pupils at a secondary school.

Mr Weston told about 320 people – made up of Year 11 pupils and staff – at Croesyceiliog School about his life and recovery after received 46 per cent burns in 1982 on Wednesday.

He has become a well-known figure throughout the UK for talking about his experiences in the Falklands after the landing ship he was on, Sir Galahad, was bombed by Argentinian aircraft.

Pupils and staff were also told about his experiences in Northern Ireland and Kenya after he joined the Welsh Guards when he was 16.

The school’s assistant head teacher in charge of Key Stage 4 Lisa Taylor said: “He told us all about [the Falklands] and his message moved onto how that could have been the end, how he could have given up and thought the world owed him a living.

“He was so impressive and so inspirational and motivational.”

Mrs Taylor said the talk was a special treat for Year 11 pupils to drive them to succeed in their forthcoming GCSE exams.

Mr Weston first visited Croesyceiliog in October 2014 and Mrs Taylor said enquiries have already been made to ensure he returns to talk to Year 11 pupils in 2017.
