TORFAEN primary schools renewed old rivalries recently as they took to the pitch at an annual football tournament organised by Cwmbran Shopping and Gwent Police.

The Cwmbran Shopping tournament, now in its fourth year, was held at the Football Factory, and saw 136 pupils spread across 17 schools taking part.

Competition was fierce as three-time reigning champions St David’s RC Primary School, from Pontnewydd, were dethroned by George Street Primary School, from Pontypool, at the indoor sporting facility in Cwmbran.

Neil Eley presented the Cwmbran Shopping Shield to George Street’s winning team, while Llanyrafon Primary School finished as runners-up.

They received the plate from inspector David Morgan at Gwent Police.

Mr Eley, Cwmbran Shopping’s security manager, said: “Community is at the heart of our ethos at Cwmbran Shopping, and we are always delighted to work with Gwent Police to provide a day of fun physical exercise for children in the surrounding areas.

“Nurturing local talent is extremely important to us and the tournament is a great opportunity for talented youngsters to come and show off their skills while enjoying a good kick-about.”

David Reynolds, a community support officer at Gwent Police, said: “I was thrilled to see the event run so successfully for the fourth year in a row.

“It was a pleasure organising a tournament with which teachers and staff at The Football Factory get so enthusiastically involved. We hope to invite primary school children of all ages to compete in next year’s football event.”
