A SWAN rescue company is urging people to drive safely as swans and their cygnets start to cross busy roads in Llantarnam.

Peter Martin and Ellie Kershaw of Swan Rescue in Newport have said that the same family of swans keep crossing the road Llantarnam Business Park each year, after a Twitter user posted a picture of them.

Mr Martin said it is down to the individual swan family deciding to move home.

In previous years, the Argus was told the swan family were attracted to a reflection is a nearby bus stop which made the swans cross the road.

He said: “A bus shelter and office doors were a problem last time we were called out the other week.

“Often the cause is that some adult swans feel the need to move away from the nest and find alternative accommodation.”

The Swan Rescue Company, who were originally known as Gwent Swan Rescue, were formed over 30 years, and help any swans or water-based bird in need.

Mr Martin said it’s around the sixth year they have heard of the swans in Llantarnam pond moving on, and it won’t be the last.

He and Mrs Kershaw have said that many swans will cross busy roads after having their cygnets, but people can help keep them safe by driving carefully.

He added: “Drive carefully, it’s really up to the car drivers to keep an eye out.

“But if a bird is injured we will ensure they will get the best treatment possible.”
