SCORES of families took part in a colourful and noisy parade at the Pontypool Party in the Park.

The event, with a 'Going for Gold' theme to  mark the forthcoming Olympic Games in Rio De Janeiro, saw thousands descend on Pontypool Park for a day of entertainment.

But the centrepiece was a parade through the park by children, many with their parents, and many who had spent some time beforehand making eye-catching masks to show off to the crowd as they walked.

Children's Samba bands, and local nursery and childcare groups were well represented and cheered on by a sizeable crowd along the route.

As well as a music and dance stage, other attractions included arts and crafts, laser tag, trampolines, and a inflatable assault course.

The Olympics theme was well represented through local sports clubs, demonstrations, and 'have-a-go' taster sessions.

Mayor of Torfaen Veronica Crick, who was at the event on Saturday, said there was “well over a thousand” people there in the afternoon.

She said: “It was brilliant. We were very lucky because the worst of the weather stayed away.

“There were lots of stalls and charities represented there and it was great to see so many youngsters.”
