A FUNDRAISING run which is taking place in Torfaen on Sunday, July 17 is expected to have its largest turnout in its event history.

The Mic Morris 10k run, organised by the Torfaen Sports Development team, has had 535 runners pre-enter the race, with the deadline for entries quickly approaching.

“We are expecting the biggest ever turnout at the Mic Morris 10k on Sunday, and we estimate that we will have near to 600 runners, if not more,” said Christine Philpott, of Torfaen Sports Development.

“We have runners confirmed from all over the country, so it would be wonderful if members of the Torfaen public could come along on the day to show their support.”

All the profits from the run will go to the Mic Morris Memorial Sporting Trust Fund, in honour of the former police officer and brilliant British international middle distance runner from Pontypool

He died aged 24 during a training run in 1983, and money raised from the trust will go to support talented sporting youngster in Torfaen.

The trust fund was set up between Gwent Police and Torfaen Borough Council and the race will start at 9am on Cwmavon Road, Blaenavon and finish at Pontypool Park on Sunday.

As the route goes down the valley, the road between Blaenavon and Abersychan will be closed from 8am until 11.30pm, or when the final runner has passed the road closure.

Entry forms available from Cwmbran Stadium or Pontypool Active Living Centre, by phoning 01633 628936 or by emailing christine.philpott@torfaen.gov.uk.
