A DAY nursery in Torfaen has achieved the second-highest rating in its latest inspection report by the education watchdog.

Inspectors from Estyn, Her Majesty’s Inspectorate for Education and Training in Wales, visited Poppies Day Nursery in Pontymoile, Pontypool, in November.

Nursery manager Brady Williams was pleased with the overall rating of good for both its current performance and also for its prospects for improvement.

“We are very pleased with the report and we are especially pleased with the excellent rating in terms of a learning environment,” said Miss Williams.

In the report, the inspectors stated: “Practitioners create an inspiring environment where excellent use is made of the location to provide exciting opportunities for children to flourish and learn important social skills.

“For example, nearly all children share resources in an exemplary manner and co-operate and take turns with each other when playing on the bikes outdoors successfully.”

The nursery’s indoor and outdoor learning areas were praised in the report, described as “very attractive” and “bright and colourful” respectively.

The interaction of the practitioners was also praised.

With the good ratings receiving, the nursery manager added that the centre will not be resting on its laurels.

“We are focused on making the improvements as well that were noted to improve the nursery further,” she added.

“We always strive to provide the best learning environment and we are very proud of our staff and our children.”

The privately-owned nursery is an English-medium centre and caters to 48 full-time pupils, ranging from birth up to the age of 12. In all other areas of the report from the inspectorate, the nursery received good ratings.

The nursery was last inspected by Estyn in May 2012.
