FROM Pontypool Museum's digital archives are two images which take a look back at a time before motorised transportation on the roads of the borough.

With the advent of the railways across the entirety of the UK and its expansion during the 19th century, the road network did not start to flourish until much later.

Before automobiles became popular and commonplace, the alternative option to get around and at a quicker pace than by foot was invariably by horse and cart.

One of the images shows a number of horse and carts in the centre of Pontypool, close to the crossing of Crane Street and George Street.

The other shows a family – with their horse and cart – outside the Horse and Jockey pub towards Mamhilad and close to Cwmoody.

These images were donated by the Pontypool Museum as part of its digital archive, which aims to preserve historic documents, images and records from the area.
