THE rebuild of a Cwmbran primary school decimated by a deliberate blaze has started.

Coed Eva Primary School’s infant and nursery blocks were destroyed following the arson attack on New Year’s Day, in 2016.

The school has had to survive with portable classrooms in the interim, but enabling works are now underway, ahead of a main construction phase.

It comes after Torfaen County Borough Council approved a £3.7million limit to carry out the build.

Gill Ellis, who is executive head teacher of the site, said she was thankful for the level of support that the school has received.

“I would like to thank parents, the community and residents for their constant support,” she added.

“The infants and nursery classrooms were damaged so these will be rebuilt and following the works the buildings will be joined to the junior building.

“We’re confident that the works will be completed in December.”

Ms Ellis said maintaining the quality of teaching had been the ultimate goal since the fire occurred.

Elizabeth Thomas, the associate head teacher at the school, added: “Obviously the works are in its early stages.

“They are currently preparing access to the building by putting down concrete.”

Sue Jenkins, whose son goes to the school, said she can’t wait for the works to be completed.

“My son was devastated when the fire happened,” said Miss Jenkins.

“The school was shut for a while and not being able to see his friends made him upset.

“Life should go back to normal when the school is repaired.

“I’d imagine the pupils are excited about it.”

Luke Mason, who lives in Glan Rhyd, said he too was very happy works had commenced.

“My daughter goes to the school,” he added. “Lots of my family went there and so did I years ago.

“The school is very close to our hearts.

“I think the whole of Cwmbran was moved when the fire happened.

“I think the same people in Cwmbran will be happy once the school has been finally re-built.”

A Torfaen council spokesman said: “The plans for the new school building are on track and we’re pleased to note that the enabling works have started to be put in place ahead of the main construction phase.”

At the end of last year, Gwent Police confirmed they had released a final suspect regarding the blaze with no further action to be taken.

A Gwent Police spokeswoman said no individuals were any longer under arrest over the incident, in November last year, although the investigation remains ongoing.
