A HISTORICAL walk in Blaenavon, celebrating the town’s industrial heritage, will take place this weekend.

The walk is the third in Blaenavon in recent months and will take place on Saturday, May 20, between 10am and noon.

The events are led by Gwent Archives and the guided walks aim to take visitors on a walk though the historic World Heritage Site where they will meet a “legend” of the industrial past.

On Saturday, walkers will follow part of the Hidden Forgeside trail and meet one of the female workers who toiled in the 19th Century’s mining industry, often for less money than their male counterparts. The third event follows popular themed-walking tours which have taken place this year including ‘Lewis Browning’ – a real-life historian who wrote A Brief History of Blaenavon in 1906.

On Saturday, May 13, walkers were also taken to the Blaenavon Ironworks, where ‘Timothy McCarthy’ demonstrated where he worked and lived in the 19th century.

The walks start and end at the Blaenavon World Heritage Centre.

The project has links to The Valleys that Changed the World initiative, an interactive series of downloadable trails which explore areas of industrial importance across Wales, with Blaenavon included.

Blaenavon and its industrial landscape is one of only three Unesco World Heritage Sites in Wales with the Step Back in Time walks funded by the Welsh Government through Visit Wales’ Regional Tourism Engagement Fund.

The project is also led by Torfaen County Borough Council on behalf of the Blaenavon Marketing Partnership.

All walks are free, however booking is essential as numbers are limited. To book a place phone 01495 742333 or email blaenavon.tic@torfaen.gov.uk
