A MEMORIAL tree was planted at Abersychan School today for a teenager who died earlier this year.

Family, friends and staff came together to pay their respects and plant a cherry blossom in memory of Jake Phillips, 14, who died suddenly on February 8.

Pupils also presented a cheque of for £1,091.61 to members of the Wales Air Ambulance, for their “work with Jake”.

His mum, Rebecca Rossiter, who lives in Varteg, said she was “thrilled” with the turn-out.

“This means a lot to us as a family and I can’t thank people enough,” she added.

“Jake would be proud of this.

“The tree will give the children and staff somewhere to go to think and remember everything about Jake.

“I’d also like to thank the Welsh Air Ambulance because they were fantastic with Jake and did their best.”

Head teacher Phil Collins described Jake as a “much loved” pupil of the school.

He said: “This isn’t a funeral service this is a time to remember Jake, who was a much-loved and really-well respected member of this school.

“We are going to grow this tree for Jake.

“People at this school can come here whenever they like and think about the times they spent with Jake.”

He added: “I’d like to thank pupils and staff for their donations to the Wales Air Ambulance.”

Jake’s two Two of Jake’s friends – Eddy Green and Rhys Langley – also read out tributes to their late friend.

Rhys said: “As we all know Jake was probably one of the best boys that ever lived.

“He was never upset or angry.

“He was always happy and kept people happy.

“He was one of my best friends and I was happy to call him my brother.”
