A MUSEUM in Torfaen has announced its 2017/18 programme of lectures which will see several guest speakers attend.

Over the coming months, Pontypool Museum will host several talks by the Pontypool Local History Society (PLHS).

The first talk, taking place on Tuesday, September 5, will explore the sinking of the RMS Lusitania in 1915 when submarine warfare was intensifying in the Atlantic.

The talk will be led by vice chairman of the Torfaen Museum Trust Mike Tanner and will also explore the works of the Gwent Glee Singers during the same year.

On Tuesday, October 3, Tony Hopkins will lead a talk on exploring the life John Roberts - Pontypool Police’s superintendent between 1830 and 1860.

On Tuesday, November 7, Terry Targett will host a talk on ‘the canal and railway from Pontnewynydd to Newport’ while Liz Luck will give a talk on ‘buttons’ on Tuesday, December 5.

In the new year, Deborah Wildgust and Donna Sweeting will give a talk entitled ‘More Curious Curios from the Museum’ (February, 6) while Dr Naylor Firth will give a talk on “Monmouthshire oddments” on Tuesday, March 6.

The final lectures include an exploration of “Charles Williams of Caerleon and his friendship with the Hanburys” by Roland Ward on Tuesday, April 3.

All are welcome but non-members of the PLHS will be charged £3 per lecture.
