A SCOUT group from Cwmbran had an unexpected guest along with them as they climbed the famous Cobbler in Argyll, Scotland last week.

The FreeSpirit ESU were joined on their climb by Scottish Member of Parliament, Graham Simpson.

The MSP was there to take on a Scout Scotland challenge for elected members of the Scottish Parliament – The Youth Advocacy Award - and the group leader Simon Fairless was delighted to have Mr Simpson along with them for the trip.

The scouts took the opportunity to quiz Mr Simpson on Scottish politics as they climbed to the top of the 800 metre peak towering over Loch Long.

Mr Fairless said: “It was great that Graham was prepared to join the Scouts on this tough climb and also for showing an interest in the youngsters and to hear what the Scouts mean to them.

“The youngsters explained to Graham that they were in two age groups. The FreeSpirit Explorer Scout Unit for 14 to 18s and also the older BreakStone Network Scout Unit for 18 to 25s and travelled to Scotland every four years to attend the National Activity Centre at Lochgoilhead.

“They also were very keen to hear from Mr Simpson about his work in the Scottish Parliament and he happy to answer the many questions that came his way.”

Mr Simpson added: “I had a fantastic day with the scouts from Gwent who had travelled for over nine hours to get to the Activity Centre, which is run by the Scouts Scotland.

“I can see why they are prepared to travel such long distances to get here.

The Centre is an impressive place, with many thousands of people coming here every year.

“The facilities are second to none for those wanting a healthy outdoor experience.

“Man fun elements are included, regardless of age or ability.

“It offers youngsters the chance to take part in water sports, climbing, river runs and a host of evening activities if they have any energy left.

“Once we set off for the Cobbler I had the pleasure spending time with some very knowledgeable young people who not only asked about Scottish politics, but were keen to give me their opinions on issues that concern them.

“It was a fantastic day and offered some of the best views in Scotland from the summit.

“I would like to thank Simon and the rest of the FreeSpirit ESU for allowing me to climb with them and also the Centre guides Liam Watson and Luke Milner for encouraging us all the way to the top.

“After our climb they made me an honorary member of their group which was a total surprise but I was delighted to accept.”
