LLANYRAFON Ladies can hold their heads high after finishing as FAW under-16s cup runners up.

The Gwent team beat some tough sides including last year’s cup holders Cardiff City to make history and reach the FAW final in Newtown, Powys, where their opponents were Caernarfon Ladies under-16s.

The FAW put a show on for the both teams and coaches, parents and everyone connected with Llanyrafon Ladies was "extremely proud" of their achievements, said manager Kevin Sims.

In the pre-match warm ups Llanyrafon Ladies suffered a blow to their team selection, as Welsh under-17s international Delyth Williams limped off with a recurring knee injury.

Caernarfon Town Ladies made the perfect start when Wales under-16 international Lois Regan scored after just four minutes.

Striker Regan caused the Llanyrafon defence problems all half with her pace and she was narrowly denied by the post mid-way through the first period.

The lead was extended in the 26th minute Regan turned provider and Nel Huws finished well to double the advantage.

Llanyrafon boss Kevin Sims made a change at half-time allowing the squad’s two ‘keepers to share the match and Jodie Buck was straight into the heart of the action as she saved from Regan.

As the match went on, the Gwent side dominated possession with captain Georgia Groves pulling the strings from midfield, while defensive duo Kate Webb and Amy Sims thwarted any threat that Caernarfon offered.

Just before the hour, Regan sliced through the defence but pushed the ball wide of Buck’s post to miss another opportunity to put the match beyond Llanyrafon.

Llanyrafon battled to the end and although they deserved a goal, it was not forthcoming and Caernarfon maintained their clean sheet and were deservedly crowned Welsh Champions.

Wales under-15 girls coach Nicola Anderson named Caernarfon's Wales international Chloe Hughes as the player of the match.

Llanyrafon are now back to league action this weekend, at home to Vale Girls on Llanyrafon South fields, kick off at 2pm, followed by another cup final at the end of this month at the SWFA Cup.
