Pontypool 30

Cardiff Metropolitan University 21

Pontypool visited the students of CMU looking to build on the previous week’s 33-17 home triumph over Glynneath to keep ahead of clubs such as RGC1404, Merthyr and Narberth.

They managed that with a 30-21 win and there was later good news when it was discovered

Narberth lost 22-17 at home to champions-elect Bargoed - although RGC 404 kept the pressure on Pooler with a 30-10 success at Glynneath.

Crossing for tries were full back Josh Hurley, right winger Chris Laing plus flanker and skipper Rob Nash and the success earned Pooler some sort of revenge after their 28- 21 defeat by the students in Cardiff earlier in the season.

After the game, Pooler team boss Shaun Rees said the victory at the Cyncoed Campus venue was a long overdue one: “We’ve not had a good record against the students on their own patch over recent season, so this was very pleasing.

“It was a very good overall squad performance and we now have a break because of Wales’ Six Nations game against France on Saturday and that gives us a good opportunity to prepare for our home match with Swansea

“It will be nice to see how we will go against them having been so disappointed in the manner we lost down there in a televised fixture at Swansea earlier this season (Pooler conceded two late tries in slipping to a 22-13 defeat at St. Helens).

Pooler remain third on the same 60-point total as north Wales-based RGC1404, who have two games in hand with both clubs scheduled to meet at RGC1404’S home ground on the final day of the season – April 25.
