WAINFELIN Bluebirds welcomed Pontnewydd United in a Division Three match on Saturday.

The Bluebirds flew out of the traps and should have been four-nil up inside the opening five minutes but Zach Heneghan missed the target with each effort.

However he did open his account on ten minutes with a neat finish after a through ball by man-of-the-match Mike Baugh.

United struggled to get out of their half as the wide men Scott Waters and Gavin Davies pinned them back with their attacking prowess. The central trio of Jonathon Davies, Tom Mounty and Sam Davies were enjoying the amount of possession they had as they were creating opportunities for the front pair. With Josh Rowlands in goal and the back three of Sam Saunders, Mike Murphy and Daffyd Heneghan rarely having anything to do, when one of them did get a touch of the ball they liked to keep it at the back just to be involved. The half ticked away as more chances came and went with several players guilty of squandering opportunities. Pontnewydd had a rare break and were unlucky not to draw level as they hit the upright.

The second half started as the first ended with the Bluebirds dominating.

More chances came but it took 10 minutes until the keeper could be beaten. A strong attacking move led to Heneghan knocking the ball down to strike partner Baugh who smashed the ball home high into the net and silenced the travelling away fans.

Bluebirds club mascot Jake Lewis celebrated, but the management of Daniel Lewis and Paul Bradbury knew different as for most of the season the Bluebirds have been guilty of complacency.

They were both proved correct as a few minutes later Sam Davies was guilty of this and lost the ball to an away striker who punished him to bring the score back to 2-1. Pontnewydd were then unlucky not to level as the striker missed a sitter.

But the Bluebirds went up the other end, and Sam Davies made amends. He picked the ball up on the half way and burst through the space in front of him before chipping the keeper from 25 yards.

This was a lead that the home team weren't prepared to throw away as they pressed and pressed. They got a deserved fourth when Baugh was brought down and Davies slotted the penalty home.

Heneghan wanted to make up for his misses and after a quality team move Baugh put him in, to coolly slot past the keeper.

Curtis Murphy missed a late penalty, denying him his first goal for the club.

Final score: Wainfelin Bluebirds 5-1 Pontnewydd.
