PUPILS from George Street Primary School in Pontypool recently represented Newport County AFC in the Kinder + Sport Football League Cup in Portsmouth.

George Street Primary, which was named school of the year at the 2015 Football Association of Wales Community Awards, won the right to represent County after triumphing against local rivals in two tournaments held at Spytty Park in Newport.

Having beaten teams from Torfaen, Newport and Blaina Gwent, the team made the trip to Portsmouth to compete against the best teams in the south of England.

Captain Ellis Cook said "It was amazing to play against teams like AFC Wimbledon, Dagenham & Redbridge, Luton Town, Yeovil, Wycombe Wanderers and Stevenage and the facilities were fantastic.

“It was great to play at such a high standard and I am very proud of the team.

“To represent Newport County was a wonderful experience and hopefully the team made everyone proud with their performances during the tournament.”

A school spokesman said: “The boys missed out on a semi-final place but the memories of the day will no doubt last a lifetime for these young men.

“It is another fantastic achievement for us as a primary school that prides itself on providing many sporting opportunities for our pupils. Everyone is so very proud!

“Well done Billy, Bradlee, Brandon, James, Jayden, Ellis, William and Noah and thanks to County legend Norman Parselle for this great experience.”
