PONTYPOOL Boxing Club’s Lauren Price won back-to-back titles at the prestigious Queen’s Cup in Straslund, Germany after coming out on top in an all-British final.

The Queen’s Cup is a category A international tournament contested by boxers from across Europe, and Price was a returning champion having won gold last year at 69kg.

This year, competing at 75kg, Commonwealth Games bronze medallist Price beat Germany’s Lisa Cielas in the semis, while England international Natasha Gale won the other last-four contest.

Gale, like Price, is a hot prospect and a member of GB Boxing’s Podium Squad, and would have been expecting to take the gold medal in Germany.

However, Price boxed superbly and once again demonstrated the potential she has for future glory – the judges awarded Price every round to give her the middleweight crown.

There was more medal success for the Welsh team, Chepstow’s Rosie Eccles winning 64kg bronze and Lynsey Holdaway taking gold in the 48kg category.

Meanwhile, Pontypool had three boxers competing in the Welsh Amateur Novice Championships Finals, in Cymmer, Port Talbot.

The championships are designed for boxers who have had between two and eight contests.

Evan James took on Torfaen Warriors’ William Bennet in the minors’ 38kg division, losing the contest on points.

Shaun Williams boxed Splott Adventure’s Lutfullah Quryshi at 75kg.

Despite a bright start, Williams was caught with a body shot in the second round and forced to take a count, prompting the referee to stop the contest.

Evan’s brother, Kieron James, boxed North Wales’ Jake Morris in the junior 32kg division and put on a great performance, dominating every round to take the title.

Pontypool’s next club show takes place this Friday at the Trevethin and Penygarn Sports and Social Club.

Doors open at 7pm with the boxing getting underway at 8pm. Tickets are just £10 for adults and £5 for under-16s.

Full details of all classes and training sessions run by the club can be found on the Pontypool Boxing Club Facebook page.
