PROP Ollie Drake was named player of the season at the Pontypool RFC annual dinner and presentation evening, writes Ray Ruddick.

Celebrating a fantastic season in which Pooler were unbeaten in the league were around 200 guests at The Parkway Hotel and Spa in Cwmbran.

It was a celebration of an historic campaign with the club being crowned WRU National Championship champions for the second consecutive season, an invincible Championship season, winning all 22 games. And the club also enjoyed an impressive WRU National Cup run, again reaching the quarter-finals.

The evening was compered by Peter Jeffreys, executive chairman of Pontypool RFC, and the guest speaker was the BBC broadcaster Phil Steele, who had his audience laughing with some humorous stories.

The awards were as follows: Captain’s Award – Rob Nash; Supporters’ Player of the Year – Mike Herbert; Highest Points Scorer – Matthew Jones (168); Highest Try Scorer – Clayton Gullis (18); Most Promising Players – Mike Herbert & Jordan Thomas; Players’ Player of the Year – Aaron Coundley; M5 Associates Award (Sponsor) – Kieran Meek; 100 Appearances – Clayton Gullis (119) & Aaron Quick (119); 50 Appearances – Rhodri Usher (50); Most Appearances – Clayton Gullis (25) & Kieran Meek (25) - all league & cup games.

Twenty-seven of the playing squad were in attendance and each was presented with their WRU National Championship-winning medal – Rob Nash, Aaron Coundley, Callum Davies, Aaron Quick, Kieran Meek, Mike Herbert, Ben Parry, Tom Hancock, Dan Robinson, Martin Luckwell, Marc Thorley, Clayton Gullis, Jordan Thomas, Joel Mahoney, Lewis Ball, Ben Sparks, Matthew Jones, Brendan Lampitt, Owen Williams, Jamie Jeune, Lewis Prothero, Rhodri Usher, Curtis Gregory, Ollie Drake, Ethan Davies, Tom Baker and Alex Watkins.

The two most prestigious awards are the Player of the Season and Clubman of the Season, which is now called the Chairman’s Award, in memory of the club’s late chairman, Barrie Calder-Matthews.

The Player of the Season award went to tighthead prop Ollie Drake for his consistently good performances throughout the campaign.

The Chairman’s Award went to club assistant Alan Rice.

Alan has been a supporter for more than 40 years and has been a team assistant for the last few years. He attends almost every training session and every match, helping with the team preparation such as kit, water bottles, tackle bags etc and Alan has been rewarded for his commitment to the club.
