PONTYPOOL AND DISTRICT SCHOOLS 25 VALE OF GLAMORGAN 20
PONTYPOOL and District Schools maintained their unbeaten record with a hard fought win over a very strong Vale side.
The Pooler boys were put on the defensive by a strong and quick team who turned early possession into a well earned try.
Pooler responded when Will Reed scored an excellent try from a superb break before the home team started to win some possession with flanker Brennan Gaite responsible for a number of turnovers.
Reed scored a second try to put Pooler in front but Vale fought back to equalise.
Pooler half backs Ben Pilot and Joel Doughty started to control play and it was left to centre Morgan Spence to stretch Pooler’s lead in the second half with an excellent turn of speed to score a try wide out.
Vale hit back to add to their tally before Ben Gomez crossed for another for Pooler following good support play after a scintillating break by Spence.
Pooler’s final try was scored following an interception.
Pooler looked in complete control but the Vale had the final say with another superb try after strong pressure on the Pooler line.
Prop Evan Perry and hooker Ben Moa worked tirelessly for the Pooler cause and flanker Harry Bendon gave his all to ensure Pooler gained revenge for last year’s DC Thomas Cup final defeat.
Pontypool B team the Tigers battled to maintain their unbeaten record against Vale’s second string.
Trailing 25-10, the Tigers fought back to gain a creditable draw and were unlucky not to snatch victory in the last minute.
Outstanding for the Tigers were flankers Morgan Barrett and Stirling Couture who both crossed for a try apiece.
Centre Jordan Smith and wings Charlie Marter and Garwin Price also crossed for tries.
