BLUES player-manager Ryun Huish started his first game in two years after a serious knee injury had threatened to end his playing career.

Blues came into this game in bottom position and without a league victory this season.

The game started brightly with Cwmbran having the better of the early exchanges.

After 22 minutes Blues took the lead when skipper Mike Waite picked up a loose ball, beat one defender then shot into the corner of the net.

Almost immediately Town were awarded a controversial penalty, Blues keeper Lee Jones brilliantly saved at the foot of the post.

With half-time approaching Craig Tanner made a great run and his teasing cross eluded defenders and attackers and the chance was gone.

The first twenty minutes of the second half belonged to the Town and it came as no surprise when their left-winger made the scores even.

Blues then replied with the best move of the game, Darren Harris drove into the Town half and played a one two with Marc Browning, he then played the ball for Jamie Brankley who in turn found Lee Penry, Penry made no mistake from just inside the box.

Blues were now rampant and Penrys cross found Tanner, his shot was narrowly wide of the target.

With time running out, Steve White made a storming run up the right flank before finding Penry, his cross was bundled in at the far post by Waite to tie up the three points.

This result was well-earned with a solid defence, a hard working midfield and a creative, hard running front two, managers Huish and Wathen will be well pleased with this performance and will look to build on this and pull themselves away from the relegation zone.

Blues’ second and third sides were both playing in the MIA CARS open cup quarter finals, the Thirds went through to the semis by beating Tranch 3-1 on penalties, the seconds were beaten 2-1 by Panteg.
