Blaenavon Blues 3 Abertillery Excelsiors 2

THIS exciting basement battle came alive on the thirty minute mark when Jamie Brankley’s good run resulted in a corner which Blues skipper Mike Waite scored from with a neat finish.

Waite and Lee Penry then combined to put Steve White free. His cross was cut out by Herridge in the Excelsiors goal as Jake Bull threatened but the first half ended with the Blues fully in control.

At the start of the second half Abertillery sent on substitute Adam Bishop and fifteen minutes into the half he scored their equaliser.

Almost immediately Excelsiors won a free kick on the left and Shaun Smith crossed for Bishop to score again with a free header.

Abertillery now had the bit between their teeth and dominated play.

Mike Waite never gave up and with time running out his perfectly-weighted through ball found Penry, whose well struck shot found the far corner of the Excelsiors goal.

Straight from the kick off Ryan Huish made a great tackle just inside the opposition half and the ball broke to Penry who fired in an unstoppable shot off the underside of the bar to secure a much needed three points for his side.

This result was well deserved with an improving Blues side slowly climbing the league table and away from the relegation zone.

This weekend the Blues travel to face fellow strugglers Pentwynmawr Athletic.
