Hockey finals prove Croesyceiliog too strong for opposition
10:10am Thursday 14th March 2013 in Sport
CROESYCEILIOG School travelled to Caernarfon for the Welsh Under 18 Finals and faced stern opposition in the pool stages.
Croesyceiliog played Cowbridge in their 1st pool game and came away with a drawwith a goal from captain and Welsh Senior player Danielle Jordan, they then faced Christ College Brecon.
The two schools had met in the semi finals for the previous two years with Croesyceiliog winning on both occasions and they were to make it three in a row with a convincing 2-0 victory, goals coming from Danielle Jordan and rising star Isobel Webb.
Safe in the knowledge that the school would progress to the semi final, the girls went for the group win against Ysgol Brynhyfyd.
In a tight game Croesyceiliog triumphed 3-1, with goals from Danielle Jordan, Isobel Webb and Welsh Under 16 squad member Sara Davies.
The school then faced Blaengwar of Aberdare in the semi final, Croesyceiliog went behind by a goal, but a strong second half saw them tie the game and therefore the game would be decided on penalty flicks.
All players held their nerve and some fantastic saves from goalkeeper Lara Powell ensured that Croesyceiliog progressed to the final for the third year in a row.
Croesyceiliog then faced Gower Sixth Form College from Swansea who boasted several Welsh Under 18 players.
In an exceptionally tight game Croesyceiliog scored first with a goal from Ayse Ozgul, with just two minutes to go, Ayse again put the ball in the back of the net making it 2-0 to Croesyceiliog. In a tense last two minutes Gower pulled one back but Croesyceiliog proved to be too strong and won 2-1.
This is the first time in the history of the competition a school has won three years in a row, the girls are an exceptionally young team and hope to continue with their successes.
PE teacher Rachel Pryce and all the players would like to thank all the parents who travelled to support, Cymru Glass and Total Performance Accoun-tancy Services for their generous sponsorship.
