Injury blow for Dragons fly-half Steffan Jones
NEWPORT Gwent Dragons fly-half Steffan Jones faces a spell on the sidelines after dislocating his elbow on Saturday while wing Will Harries suffered a hamstring injury.
Jones was injured in the opening exchanges of Cross Keys' pre-season friendly against Coventry at Pandy Park on Saturday.
The 22-year-old from Bargoed was taken to hospital, underwent an operation and will now be out for eight to 12 weeks.
Jones made 22 appearances last season and broke the region's record for points in a game when he kicked 27 points against London Welsh.
The Dragons also have former Italy fly-half Kris Burton and Jason Tovey as their specialist 10s while Dan Evans moved forward from full-back last season.
Harries didn't last long either – the three-times capped Wales wing was forced off in the first quarter of Newport's warm-up at Moseley. The 26-year-old suffered a hamstring strain and will be assessed by the Dragons medical staff.
Keys overcame the National One outfit 36-12 in their final 15-a-side warm-up before the August 31 British and Irish Cup play-off against the Black and Ambers.
Johnny Lewis crossed for a brace with other tries coming from Aled James, Leon Andrews, Nathan Williams and Elliott Jones.
Newport also enjoyed a good workout against Championship side Moseley, going down 40-23 at Billesley Common.
Josh Skinner and Elliot Frewen scored tries although Newport suffered also injury scares to captain Lee Beach (knee) and fly-half Tom Hancock (shoulder).
Bedwas enjoyed a hard-earned win in their first friendly, edging out Henley Hawks 12-7 in awful conditions.
Back row forward Phil Rees scored in the first and the winner came from Dragons centre/wing Ross Wardle with the extras added by his regional teammate Jason Tovey.
Bedwas' first competitive game of the season will be on September 7 against the winners of the Keys-Newport clash to be the region's representative in the British and Irish Cup.
The three Premiership sides will be in action on Sunday in the National Sevens at Cardiff Arms Park along with Championship champions Ebbw Vale.
