OPENER Ali Hay hit a fine half-century but Monmouth Cricket Club's second team match at Ponthir Seconds was washed out at the tea interval.
Hay struck nine fours in his excellent 60 and shared an opening stand of 104 with Ian Morgan (40) as Monmouth posted 209-5 from 45 overs.
Steve Morgan made an impressive unbeaten 36 and skipper Martin Newell's 21 included a lofted six over square leg which bounced into the bar area.
George Salmon hit 14 on a wet afternoon at Oaklands last Saturday which was abandoned after heavy rain arrived at the tea interval.
Matthew Hazlehurst (2-26) and Bradley Jones (2-41) were Ponthir's most successful bowler, while young Dan Jones, an off-spinner, also impressed for the Newport outfit.
Monmouth Seconds, sponsored by Ancre Hill Vineyard, were pleased to give George Stephens his second-team debut and they remain fifth in 2nd XI Division Three of the Glamorgan and Monmouthshire League.
Monmouth Seconds host third-placed Whitchurch Heath Seconds at the Sports Ground this Saturday in their penultimate league match (12.30pm start).
