CWMBRAN RFC Under 12s welcomed Rhymney, Newbridge, Aberdare and Pontypridd to take part in their under 12s tournament.

By the time the games started the mist and drizzle had lifted somewhat although the ground was still very muddy.

All of the teams played well and all of the games were very close. The standard of rugby would put a lot of senior teams to shame.

Cwmbran’s first game was against Rhymney; to start with play moved up and down the pitch with neither side being able to break through until a powerful run by Lewis Bates put Cwmbran on the scoreboard.

A brilliant interception by Will Reed saw him run from over halfway to score, making it 10 – 0 to Cwmbran.

Cwmbran’s next game was against Newbridge and a very bruising physical encounter it was.

Good Cwmbran play put Morgan Spence over in the corner, but poor Cwmbran tackling allowed Newbridge to level the scores just before full time, making it a 5 -5- draw.

Cwmbran next played Aberdare, another very physical game up front with Cwmbran backs performing well. Lewis Bates ripped the ball in his own half and ran down the right wing to score.

A flowing Cwmbrân move put Morgan Spence over in the corner, the final word going to Lewis Bates with another great run down the right wing making it 15 -0 to Cwmbran.

Cwmbran’s final game against Pontypridd was the tournament decider.

This was a very physical, bruising encounter by two very evenly matched teams. Lewis Bates ripped the ball in a tackle and sprinted straight through the middle for the only score of the game, meaning that Cwmbran won their own tournament and Pontypridd were well deserving runners up.
