NEWPORT Gwent Dragons’ home RaboDirect Pro12 clash against Edinburgh on Sunday is in severe doubt because of the state of the Rodney Parade pitch.

Cardiff referee Neil Hennessy will hold a 9am inspection tomorrow before the Scottish side travel to see if the televised game has any chance of getting the green light.

Newport County’s game against Fleetwood this evening has been postponed because of a waterlogged surface and the Dragons’ encounter is in danger of suffering the same fate as heavy rain is forecast tonight, tomorrow and on Sunday.

Newport RFC played Aberavon at Rodney Parade last Tuesday in monsoon conditions and the pitch was heavy but playable (for rugby).

However, there are now large problem areas where frost covers were laid by the Exiles in a bid to get the go-ahead for their game.

Drainage improvement work at Rodney Parade was only half-completed last summer and left the north end of the pitch – traditionally the more troublesome end – still at risk of flooding.
