East Gwent Senior League Division 2

IN DIVISION 2, Mathern manager Lee Baker was understandably disappointed when his men lost 3-0 at Portskewett & Sudbrook – their first league defeat of the season.

Baker, who only three weeks ago had said he thought his team could go through the season unbeaten after victories home and away against nearest rivals Underwood B, accused his players of being lazy and complacent.

“It’s a very disappointing result against a beatable side,” he said.

“We let Portskewett and Sudbrook control play and we didn't complete well enough. “On the ball we couldn't play our normal game due to mistakes all over the park, and when we lost possession, we looked lazy.

“When chances came we let them go by which just isn't us and it isn't good enough.

“We let in three soft goals and it’s time to wake and pull our fingers out and make things right as a team. We are better than that.”

Mathern remain top of the table but cannot afford any further slip-ups if they are to gain promotion to Division 1.

In the only other fixture, Severn Tunnel B were awarded the three points and a 5-0 victory after Sudbrook CC B defaulted.
