Will Harries: Heat on Dragons backs as well as under-fire pack against Zebre

9:02am Friday 28th March 2014

WING Will Harries says Newport Gwent Dragons' backs are in no position to be pointing the finger at the region's under-pressure pack.

The Dragons were dismantled up front by Connacht last Sunday in a demoralising 24-8 home RaboDirect Pro12 defeat.

The Irish province scored three tries with their impressive driving lineout and also crossed the whitewash thanks to a scrum against the head.

If the Dragons are to get back to winning ways against Zebre in Parma tomorrow then they will need a dramatically improved performance from their pack.

But Harries says that the heat is also on the backs at the Stadio XXV Aprile after losing their heads in attack against Connacht.

"It does make life easier when you are getting a lot of good ball from the set piece but as backs we also made a lot of mistakes which then puts pressure on the forwards," said the three-times capped Wales wing.

"If we are going to win games then we have to come together as a team rather than pointing fingers. We just weren't at the races as a team and can tighten up in lots of the things we do.

"Connacht got 14-3 up and because we had the wind we chased the game too hard rather than showing composure and sticking to our structure.

"We can't afford another performance like that because Zebre are at home and will bring it to us. They've improved a lot from last season, have already beaten Cardiff Blues twice and it will be tough.

"But we've responded to poor performances in the past and are lucky to have another chance to claw it back and get a win out in Italy."

Harries was one of the better performers in the defeat to Connacht and has played admirably of late despite his time at Rodney Parade coming to an end after five seasons.

The winger, who is 27 on Sunday, is not getting a fresh contract and is close to agreeing a deal elsewhere but is hoping to add to his tally of 20 tries for the region before signing off.

Harries said: "I'm enjoying my rugby and hopefully I'll get plenty of ball in the run-in and score some tries.

"I'm still contracted by the Dragons and will be giving 100 per cent to help the team finish as high as possible."
