WILL BRAGG has hailed a perfect start to Glamorgan's season and declared there is plenty more to come as they chase a return to Division One of the County Championship.

The left-hander was in the middle when fellow opener Gareth Rees knocked off the winning runs to beat Surrey by 10 wickets at the Oval on Wednesday.

The hosts had been in the box seat at the start of day four but Graham Wagg (six for 29) and Michael Hogan (four for 31) skittled them for just 81.

That set the scene for Bragg (72 not out) and Rees (75 not out) to bat imperiously in an unbeaten stand of 156 that secured Glamorgan's first victory in their county championship opener since 1998.

"It was the perfect start," said the 27-year-old. "To beat one of the favourites for promotion gives us a massive boost and shows that we are a quality side.

"Everyone thought that Surrey were in the driving seat but the bowlers were top class, Graham Wagg and Michael Hogan changed the game in an hour.

"I've never won the first game of the season and to do it in the manner that we did will make a few teams sit up and take notice.

"We have targeted seven wins to get promotion so to tick one off so early is great and the best thing is that there is a lot more to come from us."

The impending arrival of South African batsman Jacques Rudolph, who missed the Surrey game because he was competing in an Ironman race, made it all the more important that the openers got off to an impressive start.

Bragg, who scored a patient 38 in the first innings, said: "Opening the batting at this time of year is difficult – you only have to look at the scores across the country to see that – and it's great that we have both made a good start and knocked off the runs without any aggro.

"We had a century partnership against Cardiff MCCU in pre-season as well (when Bragg struck an unbeaten 100) so that has helped the confidence.

"And it will be a massive boost when Jacques comes in; look at the sides that get promoted and they have players fighting for places."

Glamorgan are next in action when they host Gloucestershire at the Swalec Stadium, starting on Sunday, April 20.
